We help nonprofits strengthen the systems that make everything else possible.

Blue Heron Nonprofit Consulting works with nonprofit leaders at pivotal moments; when growth, transition, or complexity has outpaced the infrastructure underneath it. Our work is project-based, time-bound, and focused on one thing: building internal clarity and durable systems that support your mission for the long term.
We specialize in systems design, strategic partnership, and interim leadership.
-
Our core service
We help nonprofits design practical, durable systems that answer real operational and financial questions — and that leaders can actually use.
This includes:
Multi-year financial planning and scenario modeling
Budget redesign and decision-making frameworks
Staffing, compensation, and salary structure development
Tuition, fee, or pricing model analysis and design
Grant readiness and grant management system design
Internal dashboards, tools, and templates
Program development including strategic planning, funding strategy and identification, staffing models, growth planning, and budget design
Our systems are built to be understandable, action-oriented, and sustainable — even as your organization grows and changes.
Engagements are project-based, with clear deliverables and timelines.

You're in the seat. You don't need someone to run the organization — you need a steady, experienced thought partner who can help you think more clearly, decide more confidently, and lead more effectively.
This is not coaching in theory. It is operational and strategic clarity in practice.
We work alongside Executive Directors to:Make sense of your financial story and translate it into decisions
Clarify priorities when everything feels urgent
Pressure-test major decisions before you make them
Identify what's working, what's straining, and what needs to change
Build the internal frameworks that reduce how often you're guessing
This work is particularly well-suited to new Executive Directors finding their footing, leaders navigating a period of growth or restructuring, and EDs who have the vision but want a sharper operational lens.
Engagements are time-bound and defined in a scope of work. This is not an open-ended advisory relationship. -
We help organizations approach grant funding realistically and strategically — without taking on the role of ongoing grant writer.
This includes funding strategy and grant readiness assessments, grant calendars and internal tracking workflows, review and strengthening of drafted proposals, and support aligning grant activity with organizational capacity.
We do not provide ongoing grant writing, grant submission, or repetitive production-based proposal work. Our focus is on building the systems that make grant funding more effective over time.
-
Limited, by design
Offered only for discrete, defined projects — such as capital campaigns, facility expansions, or program launches — where a small number of targeted grants are required and active management is needed through to completion.
Grant Writing includes:Grant strategy for the specific project
Identification and prioritization of appropriate funders
Writing and submission of designated targeted proposals
Alignment with project budgets and timelines
Grant Management includes:Multi-funder budget alignment across the full project
Drawdown schedules and cash flow planning
Compliance and reporting calendars for each funder
Funder relationship management throughout the grant period
Coordination to ensure budgets, timelines, and requirements stay aligned
These services can be combined or engaged separately, depending on where your organization needs support.
This work is time-bound and tied to a specific project. It is not ongoing or annual grant management.
-
A focused diagnostic for nonprofit leaders who want to understand where structural gaps are limiting sustainability — and where targeted improvements would have the greatest impact.
What this covers:
Financial and decision-making systems

Grant and revenue infrastructure
Operational clarity and workflow reliability
Leadership capacity and decision bottlenecks
What you receive:
A written Capacity & Systems Brief outlining key findings
Identification of priority risks and opportunities

This assessment can stand alone or serve as the foundation for a longer systems design or strategic partnership engagement.
Timeline: 4–6 weeks
Who We Work With
You're building or launching something. You have a mission — and maybe even funding. But before growth outpaces stability, you need structure.
You're a new Executive Director. You stepped into the role and suddenly everything is your problem. You don't need motivation. You need clarity.
You're growing faster than your systems. Revenue is up. Programs are expanding. But the infrastructure hasn't kept pace — and you can feel it.
You're taking on a capital project or major expansion. Capital projects reveal every weak system. You need someone who can help you build the structure so the project doesn't destabilize the organization.
We may not be the right partner if you're looking for:
Ongoing or annual grant writing
Grant submission or portal management
Day-to-day bookkeeping or administrative services
Facilitation-heavy consulting without systems follow-through
Open-ended advisory relationships
Our engagements are designed to be focused and efficient, not open-ended. Meetings are agenda-driven and scheduled as needed. We prioritize clarity, calm, and realistic progress — and everything we build is designed to keep working after our engagement ends.
